Full Day Tomar & Santarém - Lisboa

The first stop of this tour is Tomar, a city founded by the Order of the Knights Templar, and where it is still possible to hear many secret legends about those mysterious times. The Castle and Convent of Christ were built by the Templars and are classified as a World Heritage Site, by Unesco. In the Convent you will be able to visit the octagonal “Rotunda” that was modeled on the Salomon Temple itself. In the historical centre of Tomar, you will not want to miss the parish Church of St. John, the Baptist as well as the old synagogue. This synagogue dates back to the 15th century and was closed in 1496 when the Jews were expelled from Portugal. In the 20th century it was transformed into a Jewish museum and nowadays, when the number of Jews in the city is enough for religious service, the museum is again used as a synagogue. Free time for lunch in Tomar.

Our next destination is Santarém, the capital city of gothic style in Portugal. Our first visit will be to the Santarém Archaeological Museum, housed in a Romanesque Church. Among its collection of lapidary items you will find the tomb of a 15th century nobleman who was killed in battle. Commissioned by his widow, this outstanding flamboyant gothic style tomb was built to house just a single tooth! Only a few steps away you will visit the beautiful gothic Church of Graça, where you can see the gravestone of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator who discovered Brazil in 1500. Our tour in Santarém ends in Portas do Sol, the remaining of the castle of the city. Its walls offer to the visitants amazing views over the Tagus River. It will be these outstanding views that you will bear in mind during your trip back to Lisbon.
